On the sunny afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019 from 12-3:30 p.m. the St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) community celebrated the dedication of the brand new Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. The event was open to the public to celebrate, enjoy watching and cheering for the soccer and field hockey teams, gather for fanfare, participate in various activities and purchase from food trucks. It drew large crowds from the student body, families, alumni and community.
The celebration kicked off with a dedication ceremony at 12:30 p.m. and was followed by a men’s soccer game on the grass field against Bridgewater College at 2 p.m. The Seahawks won the game 4-1. The field hockey team played at 6 p.m. against Eastern Mennonite University on the artificial turf field and won 7-1. The women’s soccer team won their game against Stevenson University on the grass field at 7 p.m. 2-1.
The namesake for the new facility comes from Jamie L. Roberts, an economics major alumna and a soccer, basketball and lacrosse athlete at the college. She passed away in 2014 but is remembered for embodying SMCM’s core values. Her memory is now honored through the name of the new stadium.
The new two-story stadium building is surrounded by both a grass and a turf field that can seat 800 observers for each field. The building also contains two men’s and women’s locker rooms, a referee’s locker room, a training room, restrooms, concessions, VIP boxes, two press boxes, and a hospitality suite. It will be a home for dedicated Division III student-athletes. It will also host local youth summer sports camps and other outdoor community programs.
