Volleyball Team Still Optimistic

This season, the volleyball team has won 2 and lost 3 of its conference games. Out of the season, it has lost 14 games and won 5.

However, the team is still really optimistic. On the season as a whole, Danielle (Dani) Thorne ’13 said, “It’s been going really well actually, our record hasn’t been that great this season but we’ve been improving the whole time, and our conference record is pretty good so it feels like a good season to me”

The team does not have any freshmen players this year. “We had 15 people last year, and we graduated 2 people, so we would have had 13 girls, but then 2 girls transferred. It was kind of after recruiting season, so it shook out that we only have 11 now. We have enough personnel so it’s fine, people are in new positions but everyone is doing a great job,” said Thorne.

Thorne was particularly proud of the team’s game against York, saying , “We just played awesome…Defensively we played well, and we played well offensively too.  It wasn’t even like everything was going our way which makes it that much better because we had mistakes but we’d get it back and recover.” It’s no surprise Thorne was so happy with this game, considering she got her first career double-double and had a career best in helpers.

Other members of the team also played well in the York game too. According to the SMCM athletics website, “The St. Mary’s attack was led by senior middle blocker Gena Hlavinka, junior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc, and sophomore Michelle Klima as the trio tallied eight kills each.”

On October 26th, the team will have Dig Pink game to raise money for breast cancer. Thorne said, “Dig Pink is a thing lots of schools do, and people will pledge for how many digs you do.” According to Thorne the team averages about 68 digs per game.

In explaining the difference between this year and previous years, Thorne said, “This is my third year. In the past two years we’ve done a lot better in the season record wise,  but I think that we are doing as well in the conference so it doesn’t really matter…we are losing more games, but we are also playing really tough teams like Juniata, who were national champions like three or four times…I guess the main difference is that we are losing more games, but it is not really bad because we are winning the important ones.”

When asked about future games and competitors, Thorne replied,“Our coach always tells us to worry about our side of the court and to just play our game. We usually don’t get a lot of information about the team beforehand. I think it kind of psyches teams out sometimes when you worry too much about what the opponent is doing.”

She also wanted to promote the team, saying, “More people should come to volleyball games because everyone who comes always enjoys it because it is a fast paced game, there is a point like every 30 seconds, and it’s exciting to watch”
