The Student Trustee Selection Process for academic year 2011-2012 officially opened on Monday! The position of Student Trustee plays a crucial role in providing a student voice to such pertinent questions as tuition, new facilities and the presidential search. Most of the members of our Board of Trustees do not have an opportunity to interact with the student body, so they created the position of Student Trustee quite a few years ago to help them better understand student needs and wants, as well as to give the students a voice of their own.
As a voting member of the Board, the Student Trustee provides student insight on all matters brought before the Board. Many Board members go out of their way to solicit the opinion of the Student Trustee in order to make their own vote a more informed vote. This is a chance to learn how an institution such as St. Mary’s functions at all levels. You will have an opportunity to interact with some of the most accomplished people in the nation, participate in a decision-making body overseeing millions of dollars and thousands of people, and actually make a difference in the direction St. Mary’s is going.
Now, this is not to say you get to do all of this without any obligation. This opportunity requires a two year commitment to the school, and more importantly, the student body. Therefore, it is only open to current freshman and sophomores who will be here for the 2011-2012 academic year. In your first year, you will be the Student Trustee-in-Training. As such, you will attend Board meetings, serve on the Buildings and Grounds committee, and learn how everything works, shadowing the Student Trustee. In your second year, you will be a voting member of the Board of Trustees, give a report at each meeting and serve on the Enrollment and Student Affairs Committee.
As mentioned, this position is designed to represent the students to the Board. The most crucial part of this job is to gather student opinion on every relevant issue and be able to articulately convey that opinion to the Board. It is the opportunity of a lifetime, but it does not come without responsibility. I encourage all current freshman and sophomores to apply for this position. Applications are available at the Information Desk in the Campus Center, and the selection process will be ongoing through January and February of next semester. Questions can be directed to me, the current Student Trustee-in-Training, or to Debbie Travers, the current Student Trustee. Thank you all and I look forward to working with next year’s Student Trustee-in-Training!
