Greetings from the Student Trustee

Hi St. Mary’s!

The weekend of October 2nd and 3rd was a busy time for me! On Friday, Oct. 2nd, I met with the Presidential Search Committee as one of the two student representatives on the committee. We spent a little over two hours within the committee engaging in a really interesting dialogue about the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates, various constituencies and their preferred candidates, and the real basis of what it is we need in a new president. While I can’t reveal details about that discussion, Liam Bradley, your other student representative, and I were both extremely involved in the conversation in order to present as many facets of student opinion as possible.
On Sunday, the 3rd, the Board of Trustees had a quarterly meeting. I know the question on everyone’s mind is “Who is the next president?” and I can honestly say that I don’t know. The discussions that the Board of Trustees had about the new president took place in a closed executive session, which the student trustee is not legally allowed to attend. Also, as a committee, we decided to refrain from letting the community know the result of the Board’s discussion immediately after that meeting. We want to make sure that there is a formal agreement between the College and that candidate before publishing any names, so stay tuned for the release of the name of our new president! As of writing this, I am unsure of when that will be announced, but I’ll let the students know as soon as I hear!
During the general session of the Board meeting, I presented my report to the Board. In that report, I discussed orientation, the presidential search, and some of the feedback that I’ve gotten about the waterfront improvements. I also presented to the Board the concerns about Bradford Persistent Agent and concerns about the overcrowding in the residence halls. The Board was extremely concerned about the problems students have been having with Bradford, and they want to be kept updated on the problems. Please email me with your concerns about the program!
I want to thank the student body for how active they have been throughout the presidential search process. I read ALL of the student input that was sent to me and did my best to present that in committee, and I really appreciate how much thoughtful and insightful feedback was sent to me. In the future, if any student or group of student wants to present something to the Board or to an administrator, please get in touch with me! I’ve had experience working with those groups, and I would be more than happy to help figure out the best way to get your voice heard.
Also, even though I just gave a report to the Board about the student body, feel free to send me your thoughts throughout the semester if something is going on that you think should be included in my next report. Send me your concerns, questions, and comments about the College, especially if you’re not sure of whom to go to. I’d be more than happy to help you to the best of my ability!
