Baseball Sweeps Mary Washington, Five Win Streak

The Men’s Baseball team is on a 5-game winning streak after defeating Wilkes University and University of Mary Washington in recent games and is now number one in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). The Seahawks have a 9-3 record and a 3-0 conference record. The team won every game in last week’s three game series against Mary Washington.

Men’s baseball played Mary Washington on Feb. 25 and a had a double-header on Feb. 28. The Seahawks smashed Mary Washington with final scores of 18-2 the first game, 6-5 the second game and 6-4 in the final game. The Seahawks have not swept Mary Washington since 2000. Junior Jacen Killebrew said, “I never thought we would have swept Mary Washington in my tenure at St. Mary’s.”

This recent win adds to the team’s already strong season. With only 3 losses, the Seahawks are looking forward to winning more games and holding onto their number one spot in the CAC.

A double header against the College of Southern Maryland was cancelled due to inclement weather as well as a game against conference opponent Stevenson University, which is second in the conference. The game against Stevenson was rescheduled to this past weekend.

The team has credited their strong cohesiveness, defense and speed to their victories. They have been able to keep the opposing team from scoring through strong teamwork and few mistakes. First-year Nick Urso said, “The team has great chemistry and this allows us to come out on top against other teams.”

The team has a strong bond off the field as well. Several team members commented on the unity the team has; they consistently spend time with each other and offer support. Killebrew said the team “tend[s] to hang out with each other when the opportunity arises.”

However, the Seahawk’s season has not been without problems. The team has had five arm injuries in the bullpen, but Head Baseball Coach Lew Jenkins said the remaining pitchers are “doing a very good job.”
The team has also been trying to work on improving advancing runners and getting players home. Sophomore Mark Dattilio said, “[We] need to improve on being able to score runners in scoring position and advancing the runners through bunting.”

Baseball has also received votes on on their Top 25 list. Teams from around the nation get voted on by a panel of coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country to determine the top 25 baseball teams in the nation.

The Seahawks have several upcoming games, including conference games against Stevenson, Gallaudet University and York College.

The baseball team is looking forward to the rest of the season and to future victories. Dattilio said, “I just want to say thanks to all our fans that support us and we’ll keep doing what we can to win the CAC.” But they also made sure not to lose their heads amidst their victories; Urso said, “Our recent wins were great and well deserved, but in this game you have to have a short memory. It’s time to move on and focus on the future battles ahead.”
