With a strong 6-1 record at the start of the season, the St. Mary’s Women’s Field Hockey team has been in it to win it from the beginning. And as the season comes to a close, their drive is far from fading.
The Capital Athletic Conference awarded Kelsey Wirtz, a first year goalkeeper for the College, the player of the week award for “Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.” Wirtz is the second Seahawk on the women’s soccer team to win the award this year.
This season is best described as a roller coaster of wins, losses, and emotion. The Sweet Sixteen Seahawks finished out their run in the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championships on Friday, Mar. 12, with an incredibly close 92-87 game against Franklin & Marshall College that pushed the Diplomats into sectional final action on Mar. 13.
For the third time in the history of St. Mary’s College, the men’s basketball team took the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship title, defeating Wesley College and earning the chance to shoot for gold in the NCAA Division III Championship rounds.
With nine consecutive cancelled games due to poor field conditions and indoors-only practices before an away-game season opener, the St. Mary’s men’s baseball team remains in an inconvenient setback with the start of Spring 2010.
