Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams at St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) have concluded their individual fall matches for 2019. Some of the men’s tennis players will compete in the Men’s ITA Regional Tournaments on Oct. 4-6.
The men’s tennis team had a phenomenal fall season, winning all three matches they played in as a team. Their first win came against the Catholic University of America on Sept. 14. The Seahawks swept the doubles competition with wins by senior Jon Gorel and first year Stephen Alam, seniors Ethan Garren and Jack Brandenburg, and senior Ron Stith and first year Liam Pratt. These doubles victories propelled the Seahawks towards a strong performance in the singles competition as well. Gorel took down Catholic’s number one player 6-2,7-5 for a huge win to start his senior year. Playing in the number three spot, Alam swept his Catholic counterpart 6-0,6-0 for his first collegiate victory. Brandenburg was able to claim a win in the number four spot 6-4,6-3, and Stith won in the fifth spot 7-5,6-0. This all allowed the Seahawks to cruise to a 7-2 win, according to smcmathletics.com.
The Seahawks carried over the momentum from the Catholic match into their matchup against Gettysburg College on Sept. 17. In fact, the men’s team fared even better this time as they completed a clean sweep and won 9-0. Once again Gorel and Alam took down the top doubles pair, while the duos of Garren and Brandenburg and Stith and Pratt took out the two and three doubles pairs. Gorel, Alam, Garren, Brandenburg, Stith, and Pratt all then went on to win their singles matches to finish off the strong victory. This was Garren’s first singles win of the year, according to smcmathletics.com.
In their final scheduled match of the fall, SMCM traveled to Hood College. In this Sept. 25 matchup, the Seahawks once again were able to polish off a 9-0 sweep of their opponents. Only one doubles match was played, as Hood forfeited their other two, but it was the pair of Alam and Brandenburg who won 8-1. Alam, Brandenburg, and Pratt each won their respective singles matches and Hood forfeited the remaining scheduled sets, according to smcmathletics.com.
This year’s men’s team consists of seniors Brandenburg, Garren, Gorel, and Stith, junior Cooper Clark, sophomores Kyle Berkowitz, Justin Karolyi, Liam Murdoch, Sam Sheats, Tyler Wilson, and Frank Zimmer, and first years Stephen Alam and Liam Pratt.
The women’s team finished their fall season with a 1-2 record. Their losses came at the hands of Catholic (Sept. 14) and Gettysburg (Sept. 17), respectfully. However, the Seahawks were able to finish off the season on a strong note with a big win over Hood on Sept. 25. Sophomore Hallie Hershey and first year Hannah Gorel were the first to score for SMCM as they won the number two doubles set 8-2. First-years Christine Folivi and Sydney Anderson followed up this strong performance with an 8-3 victory of their own. In singles play, senior Claire Bodine defeated Hood’s number one singles player in three sets (2-6, 7-5, 6-2). Gorel came up big with a victory in the number three singles, 6-1, 6-2. Finally, Folivi and Anderson won matches in the four and five spots to secure the victory for the Seahawks. They will look to carry this momentum into the spring.
For the 2019-2020 season, the women’s team consists of senior Claire Bodine, juniors Alden Gosh and Brooke Oliver, sophomores Jackie Agyemang, Baudratte Djiogo, Hallie Hershey, and Sophie Nuwar, and first-years Anderson, Folivi, Gorel, and Bella Sterner.
