Club Spotlight: SMUT

The Ultimate Frisbee team is a long-standing tradition at St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM), and is one of the many club sports which is open for anyone to join. The St. Mary’s Ultimate Team (SMUT) practices throughout the fall and spring semesters, and competes in various local tournaments and a spring break tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

SMUT begins in the fall, with relaxed pick-up games starting in the first two weeks of the semester. SMCM offers ultimate frisbee to both male and female students, however, the two teams are still extremely close, as they practice together and travel together to tournaments.

Alissa Fisher (‘19) has been a member of SMUT since her first year at SMCM, and explained that one of the things she loves most about the club is the friendships she has made over the years. Fisher continued so mention that “the sense of community with SMUT is above and beyond. The friendships [she has] made from being on this team will stick with [her] even after [she] graduates.”

Johnn Cave (‘21) has been a member of SMUT since his first year, and also mentioned the great welcoming he received after showing interest in the club. After attending the relaxed pick-up games at the beginning of his first fall semester at SMCM, Cave quickly decided to join because of the “very welcoming atmosphere” of the team.

The friendships formed through SMUT last well beyond graduation, as Fisher stated, “people that were on the team years ago, before I even started to go here, still make it a point to reach out to the current team.” Each year, SMUT hosts an Alumni game in the fall and members of previous years are able to return to campus and engage in a game with the current team.

Aside from the relaxed pick-up games at the beginning of the fall semester and the Alumni game, SMUT travels to various tournaments in the fall and spring to compete with other teams from around the nation. In the fall, the team traveled to James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. to compete in a tournament. In the spring, the teams traveled to High Tide in South Carolina, as well as Towson University for a more local tournament.

The farthest tournament in which SMUT competes is High Tide in Myrtle Beach, S.C., which takes place over SMCM’s spring break. Using club funding, the men’s and women’s teams rent a house together and are able to bond on the beach during down time between games. Fisher explained, “one of my favorite memories from High Tide was when the entire team walked to the beach and just hung out for the entire day. We played a lot of sally sticks, can jam, and spike ball. It was all around one of the best vacations I went on!”

Cave stated that his favorite memory from the 2019 trip to High Tide was the men’s victory over Shenandoah University. Cave explained, “we started down by two points then ending up scoring ten in a row to win 10-2. It was extra satisfying because [Shenandoah] is in our section for sectionals.” He also mentioned that he too loves spending time with his friends and joking around with his teammates on the trip.

SMUT is a great way to stay in shape and to make new friends around campus. The team is always accepting new members and anyone is encouraged to come out to a practice to see what the team is all about.
