Wesley College cut short Seahawk baseball conference aspirations with a 12-11 defeat of St. Mary’s on April 18.
The final runs came in a dramatic bottom of the ninth finish as Wesley pulled ahead, eliminating St. Mary’s 4-run lead.
St. May’s finished sixth in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) with a 7-11 conference record and a 15-20 overall record.
In the game against Wesley, the Seahawks started off strong with 6 runs in the top of first inning, followed by 5 runs in the top of the sixth.
By the top of the ninth, St. Mary’s was in the lead, 11-7, but 3 errors by St. Mary’s helped the Wolverines race ahead and score 5 runs.
This game followed soon after a crushing defeat on April 16 against York College during the first round of the CAC tournament.
One run in the bottom of the first, another in the fourth, and then four more runs in the fifth ensured York’s victory. The Seahawks were unable to score any runs during the game.
In a recent double header against Frostburg State University, the Seahawks won 5-3 the first game but lost the second, 3-0.
During the first game, Frostburg almost rallied during the final inning, but St. Mary’s only allowed three runs.
In the second game, only Frostburg scored and only during the fifth and sixth innings.
Both games ended seven innings in.
The Seahawks also suffered a loss against Catholic University on April 23.
They did win against Mary Washington in extra innings on April 17 and against Frostburg State April 25.
Now out of the conference, the Seahawks have one more non-conference game against Randolph-Macon on April 29.
